Italia [Bagnoregio]

BAGNOREGIO INFO:
Civita di Bagnoregio is also known as the “dying town”. Perched on a tuffaceous hill in the middle of a landslide-prone valley, this nice little town is slowly succumbing to the ravages of time. It was once a thriving town, built by the Etruscan to protect a road leading from Lake Bolsena to the north across the Tiber valley. Rebuilt in the Middle Ages, Bagnoregio became an important centre with churches, hospices and homes of illustrious families. It was also the hometown of St Bonaventura, a famous philosopher and churchman who wrote, among other things, a book about the life of St. Francis of Assisi.  In the late Renaissance famous men of letters visited the town like, for example, the learned humanist Annibal Caro. In 1695, a terrible earthquake forced the inhabitants of Civita to leave the town forever. Consequently, Bagnoregio was condemned to a slow, painful agony. Today, the visitors’ footsteps ring out in the small streets, alleys and little piazzas of a town, and its nice nooks and crannies are bathed in an almost religious silence. From Civita, you can take a wonderful view over the lunar landscape created by the Calanchi (big clay formations rising all around Civita)

Italia [Bolsena]

Italia [Montefiascone]

MONTEFIASCONE INFO:
Montefiascone is located on the highest point of the volcanic ridge surrounding the Lake of Bolsena. It is visible from the plateau of Viterbo from a very great distance and it is thought the Etruscans built on this site their most sacred shrine. The town flourished in the Middle Ages around a fortified rock and in the XIIth and XIIIth century it acquired importance as a safe haven for the popes, often forced to flee from the Papal Palace of Viterbo.

Italia [Pitigliano]

PITIGLIANO INFO:
Pitigliano sits in the southern limit of the beautiful Tuscany"La Piccola Gerusalemme" got his name both from the ancient medieval landscape of the village (that remembers the beloved Jerusalem) and the wisdom of this jewish community, that once brought to the area many cultural and social advances (including the Jewish University of Pitigliano, which was founded in the community's flourishing days).

For Jews in general, and Israelis in particular, Pitigliano presents a tribute to ancient Jewish culture and life. It is also an historic landmark that remembers and honors the strong and warm relationship and links between the Jewish minority of Pitigliano (called once "la Nazione Ebrea" for hundred of years), and the people of Pitigliano. This strong relationship of respect and admiration has been kept long after the almost complete disapperance of the Jews from Pitigliano; it is known that during the Holocaust, people of Pitigliano and sorroundings risked their lives to hide and save Jews that were escaping from the Nazi terror. It is hard to believe that in fact, today remains at Pitigliano only three Jews from what once was a strong and mumerous Jewish community
